This Friday will be the first Friday in November and the Airport Committee is excited to bring Deputy Regional Chief for the Western Pacific Regional Office at the National Transportation Safety Board Joshua Cawthra to our members.

As an NTSB Air Safety Investigator, Mr. Cawthra has investigated over 600 aviation accidents, not only in the Western United States, but worldwide, many times in remote and challenging locations.

Prior to this appointment to the Safety Board, Mr. Cawthra spent two years with Teledyne Continental Motors as an Air Safety Investigator and three years with the NTSB as a student intern/trainee.  He currently holds a commercial pilot certificate with airplane single-engine land, single-engine sea, multiple engine land and instrument airplane ratings.  In addition, he also has an airframe and power plant mechanics certificate with an inspection authorization (IA). Josh is an active pilot and currently owns a 1947 Cessna 140 that he restored, a 1946 Piper J3C that he is in the process of restoring, and the prototype Pitts S1S, which is next in line for restoration.

Mr. Cawthra is a graduate of the Utah Valley University and Embry Riddle Aeronautical University, where he earned degrees in Aeronautical Science, Operations, System Safety, and Human Factors.

Mr. Cawthra will be covering the highlights of what to do in responding to an aircraft accident.

Renewable diesel and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) are becoming increasingly important contributors to the shift towards more alternative/renewable energy thanks to their reputation for being a fast and easy way for transport vehicles to reduce emissions. And with social, political, and economical pressures mounting, the renewable fuel industry will continue to be a large part of the conversation in transitioning to cleaner energy.

This fundamental-level one-day workshop will provide attendees with much of the requisite information needed to knowledgeably discuss and/or evaluate renewable diesel and SAF projects, including:

    • A comprehensive overview of the industry
    • Process technology
    • Pretreatment options
    • Regulatory requirements and incentives
    • Economic returns
    • Project development, including utility requirements, logistics, and procurement

The program is also designed to make sure all attendees have the time and opportunity to ask questions, share challenges, and join in discussions.

    Learning Outcomes

    • Discuss the renewable fuels industry and its role in the ongoing clean energy transition
    • Consider trends in global energy with a focus on evolving supply and demand balances
    • Analyze competing renewable diesel and/or SAF technologies considering technical requirements, commercial licensing issues, process guarantees, constructability considerations, carbon footprints, and project execution
    • Assess the logistics and procurement of renewable feedstock supply, including global supply and demand balances and pricing relationships
    • Evaluate various commercial feed pretreatment and technology options
    • Examine representative project economics while considering capital costs/timing, feedstock and operating costs, product prices, working capital requirements, and more
